How to Dress for Engagement Photos and Family Photos in Banff and the Canadian Rockies: Tips for All Seasons

Banff and the Canadian Rockies experience a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions throughout the year, and choosing the right clothing and colours can make a big difference in how your photos turn out and how comfortable you feel. Whether you've booked an engagement session, anniversary or family shoot, this guide will help you prepare for your photo shoot no matter the season, with practical tips on dressing comfortably and stylishly while complementing the natural beauty of Banff, Canmore, Kananaskis and beyond. There's also tips on what to wear and what to bring if we're going on hike to a backcountry lake or mountain summit.

How to Dress for Engagement Photos in Spring (May to June)

Spring in the Rockies can be unpredictable. Temperatures often range from chilly mornings around 0°C to warmer afternoons near 20°C. Snow still lingers in higher elevations, and rain showers are common.

  • Layering is key: If it's cooler, start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a warm mid-layer like a fleece or light sweater, and don't forget to bring a waterproof jacket if there's rain in the forecast. If it's warm, see our summer tips below.

  • Footwear: Sturdy hiking shoes are best to handle muddy trails or wet grass. For more roadside locations you can get away with a nice pair of casual shoes or sandals.

  • Colours: Soft pastels and earth tones work well in spring. Think sage green, dusty rose, light blue, and beige. These colours blend nicely without overpowering the scene.

  • Accessories: If it's a colder day, bring hats and scarves that add texture and warmth but can be removed easily if the sun comes out.

Summer Outfits for Engagement Photos in Banff (July to August)

Summer offers the most stable weather with daytime temperatures often between 15°C and 25°C. However, evenings can still be cool, especially near lakes or at higher altitudes.

  • Lightweight layers: Choose breathable fabrics like cotton or linen for comfort. A light cardigan or denim jacket can be handy for cooler times of the day. For two hour shoots there is time for an outfit change so feel free to bring a second set of clothes if you'd like.

  • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes or sandals with good grip are ideal because even roadside locations can be rough and uneven. Sometimes we have to step over uneven ground to get to our photo location.

  • Colours: Bright, vibrant colours such as coral, turquoise, mustard yellow, and navy blue contrast beautifully with the lush green forests and blue skies.

  • Patterns: Avoid overly busy patterns that distract from the natural background. Simple stripes or subtle florals work well.

  • Sun protection: Sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats help protect from strong mountain sun.

What to Wear for Fall Photos in the Canadian Rockies (September to October)

Fall in the Canadian Rockies is a photographer’s dream with golden larches and crisp air. Temperatures range from 5°C to 15°C, but can drop quickly in the evening.

  • Warm layers: Wool sweaters, vests, and insulated jackets keep you cozy. Thermal leggings or long underwear can be worn under pants.

  • Footwear: Boots or hiking shoes are essential for damp trails covered in fallen leaves and cooler times of day.

  • Colours: Rich tones like burgundy, burnt orange, deep green, and mustard yellow complement the autumn foliage perfectly.

  • Textures: Incorporate cozy textures such as knit scarves, corduroy pants, and suede boots to add depth to your photos.

  • Coordinating outfits: Choose colours that harmonize without matching exactly. For example, one person in burgundy, another in mustard, and a child in forest green.

Winter Clothing Tips for Photos in Banff (November to April)

Winter in the Canadian Rockies can be quite cold, with temperatures often below freezing. Dressing warmly while looking good on camera requires some planning.

  • Insulated outerwear: It's always a good idea to bring a down jacket, hat and gloves so that you can be comfortable between photos. If the sun is out it can feel much warmer than the air temperature. Winter pea coats work well but you can sometimes get away with just a warm sweater if it's not windy.

  • Base layers: Thermal underwear and wool socks keep you warm without bulk.

  • Accessories: Hats, gloves, and scarves add colour and texture, and they keep you comfortable.

  • Footwear: Insulated boots with good traction are a must for walking in the snow.

  • Colours: Bright colours like red, royal blue, and emerald green stand out against snowy backgrounds. Avoid white or very light colours that blend into the snow.

  • Avoid bulky clothing: Choose fitted layers to maintain shape.

Colour Scheme Recommendations for Groups

When dressing couples or families, coordinating colours without matching exactly creates a balanced, natural look.

  • Pick a base colour that suits the season and landscape (e.g., navy in summer, burgundy in fall).

  • Add complementary colours in smaller amounts through accessories or layers.

  • Use neutral tones like cream, grey, or warm earth tones to tie outfits together.

  • Avoid large logos or busy patterns that distract from faces and scenery.

  • Consider the location’s colours: for example, soft blues and greens near lakes, warm earth tones in forested areas.

Essential Gear and Tips for Hiking Adventure Session Shoots

Hiking adventure shoots require a bit more advanced planning in terms of how to dress and what to bring. We'll suggest what time to meet up based on the hike and time of year. Often the weather will be warm and calm at the trailhead but once we arrive at the summit or lake, conditions can be windier and cooler so it's important to be prepared. Typically, you'll hike up wearing hiking clothes suitable for the weather that day and you'll then find a place to change once we reach our destination.

Your Adventure Session Packing List:

Bring a backpack that's large enough to carry these essentials:

  • Warm windproof jacket and a rain jacket if there's rain in the forecast.

  • Water and snacks.

  • Bear spray (we can provide one).

  • A headlamp if we're doing a sunset shoot (we can provide one).

  • The clothes that you'll change into for your shoot.

  • Makeup and a small mirror for touch-ups.

  • Hiking poles are definitely nice to have if we're going up a mountain or steep trail.

Tips and Tricks:

  • You can roll your clothes up and place them inside your backpack to keep them from getting wrinkled.

  • The wedding dress and suit can be placed inside a garment bag and strapped to the outside of your backpack.

  • To keep flowers in good shape on the hike, wrap the bottom of the flowers in a small damp towel
